The writing of poems


I understood that the art of memory that he had was a thing of the past, that he was amongst the last of his kind. The writing of the poems was only a defence against time, a shoring up of the bank to save the words from passing. I would never be such a man as he, and whatever of poetry I would know would be through writing.
